The Longevity Book Giveaway

I’ve always loved Cameron Diaz for the obvious reasons: she’s beautiful, smart, talented and funny. But what has really impressed me about her, is how she has shed light on some really important topics.

When I read her first book, The Body Book, I thought; well flipping done! It was the best holistic and practical approach to health and happiness I had read in a long time. So, when The Longevity Book came out, I knew it would be a worthwhile read. And once again, she nailed it.

We all know that in today’s world there is a huge emphasis on age reversal. We hear about it just about everywhere; but in The Longevity Book, a new conversation is started. You’ll have to read this book to get the full dialogue (it’s seriously SO good), but I love that 1) It is encouraging a healthier embrace to the aging process and 2) It is a big reminder that just because you might look great on the outside, doesn’t mean that everything is great on the inside. As you probably already know, I am a firm believer in a mind/body approach to health and wellbeing and I am so impressed at how this book tackles that.

So, without further ado, this morning I am super excited to be teaming up with Cameron’s new book, The Longevity Book. They are kindly giving away a copy of the book to THREE lucky winners. Checkout how you can enter below!

High Protein Egg Muffins (With Arugula, Feta and Quinoa)

Recently, I have been putting some major effort into getting back in shape. It only took about a year and half to find the motivation after Parker was born, but HEY, gotta start somewhere. To be honest, I have actually really enjoyed the last year and a half of being relaxed about what I ate and a lot more lenient with working out. But, since I’ve got a lot of awesome things coming up (and some that might require a lot more photos of myself), I realize that I want to put some time into my body before that all happens.
Plus, summer.
With that said, I have been working on a plan with a trainer (which I will go into more details about later). My schedule is a bit crazy so I have been having to do more home workouts; but I’ve been working out 4-5 times a week. And as for my meals – I’m trying to keep everything in balance (protein- carbs- fats) for my personal body type and goals, which requires a lot of preparation. The hardest part for me is upping my protein count without a starch based protein (like beans, sweet potatoes, etc) and having to eat 5 times a day- it’s easy to run out of ideas!
These egg muffins however, have been a lifesaver! And even better, Parker LOVES them. They are packed with nutrients, simple to make and a perfect ratio of protein, carbs and fats. I like them as a snack or for a quick breakfast.
High Protein Egg Muffins

3 eggs
1 C. egg whites
2 Tbs. plain almond milk (or regular organic milk)
1 C. cooked quinoa
1 C. arugula
1/2 C. feta
1/2 C. chopped mushrooms
1/4 C. chives
sea salt + pepper to taste
Directions:
  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees
  • In a mixing bowl, combine the egg whites, eggs, milk and some salt and pepper (whisk well and set aside)
  • Spray muffin tins with oil (about 9)
  • Stuff the arugula, mushrooms, and chives evenly into each tin (not too full)
  • Add about a tablespoon of quinoa into each tin (over the veggies)
  • Then, sprinkle some feta on top of the mixture in each tin
  • (Alternatively, you can mix together all of the ingredients excluding the egg mixture, together in a bowl before placing them into the tin)
  • Gently mix together the ingredients in each tin
  • Divide and pour in egg mixture evenly over all 9 tins (filling just barely to the top)
  • Cook for about 20-30 minutes.

Enjoy!!

Au Naturale: 4 Products I’m Loving

I have been exploring natural products since I was pregnant (so a little over two years now). And I will say, this has been a total hit or miss. At one point I even gave up for a month, bought Clinique products and just said, screw it. Then, after two weeks of switching to Clinique not only did my skin go a bit crazy with all of the changes, but I didn’t feel right about it. I will never be perfect at this “natural” routine. I’ll still slather on self tanner here and there and I’m still having a hard time with natural shampoos and conditioners, but I really felt like there are enough great natural products out there now that I can’t really give up.
So, after more time and money, I’m finally finding things I like. And I will be posting about these products that are working as I go in hopes that I can do all the hard work for others trying to switch over to natural products.
Here is the deal with my skin:
I have dry skin/combination. Mainly dry though. I also have sunspots and pigmentation from all of my previous “no sunscreen” days. I get occasional breakouts, but nothing crazy. And my skin is somewhat sensitive; not to where I need sensitive products, but certain products can really irritate it. So, with that said, I tend to look for hydrating and brightening products that aren’t too harsh when it comes to my face.
These are a few of my favorites lately:
1. Andalou Naturals Brightening Beauty Balm: Okay, I’m slightly obsessed with this stuff. I use this as my moisturizer in the morning because it is super moisturizing, has a sheer tint and also has SPF 30. Since I’ve been in California this has been a lifesaver. If I’m at the beach or headed outside for exercise I don’t love to put makeup on, so this has been a nice replacement. It looks like your face just had a big glass of water 🙂
2. COOLA Guava Mango Sunscreen SPF 50: COOLA is such an amazing brand. I really love all of their stuff. For me, I prefer a spray sunscreen because it is a whole lot easier to put on. And this stuff smells amazing (major plus). Their sunscreen definitely lives with me during the summertime.
3. Josie Maran Pure Argan Milk Intensive Hydrating Treatment: This as a moisturizer at night has been so helpful to hydrate my skin and give it a nice glow. Contrary to what you might think, the oil will actually not leave your skin feeling oily. My skin soaks this stuff right up (in the best way possible).
4. LaVanila Sports Luxe Deodorant: I used to use their regular version, but I wasn’t quite sure it completely helped with odor after a workout. This sports luxe version is a much better option if you are active. I’ve been loving it! One thing to remember is that most natural deodorants won’t really control sweat however.
Are their any natural products that you love? I am still on the search for a good shampoo and conditioner so I’d love any recommendations!

Girls Trip: Central Oregon

A girls weekend away is always a good idea. Although it isn’t as easy now-a-days with a little one, I know how important girl time and mom time is.
So last weekend myself and a few girlfriends packed our bags and headed down to Terrebonne (right outside of Bend) and stayed a house we found on airbnb. I left my computer behind in exchange for some good books and my notepad; making sure I had some time to unplug and relax.
Of course I had to make to my famous healthy waffles.
We also had to check out Smith Rock at sunset. This is a must!
It was a weekend full of laughter, great food, relaxation and adventure, that’s for sure.

Two-Ingredient Banana Oat Toddler Cookies

I know how easy it is to reach for pre-packaged food when you have a little one. I even try and grab the healthiest brands I know for my little guy, but I still would rather give him something healthier and homemade.
So, allow me to introduce to you our new favorite:
Two-ingredient cookies.

These are ridiculously simple, healthy, tasty and perfect for your little one. I also spent about, hmmm, 3 minutes prepping these? Yep.

Two-Ingredient Banana Oat Toddler Cookies
makes about 10

2 large bananas
2 cups oats
Optional ingredients:
Pinch of sea salt
Vanilla
Cinnamon
Chocolate Chips
Raisins
Coconut

Directions:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F
Place bananas and oats in a blender or food processor and blend until smooth
Add in any optional ingredients (I add sea salt, cinnamon, chocolate chips and vanilla)

A Day in Cannon Beach

Over Memorial Day weekend we decided to drive to the coast for the day to get our ocean fix. It was a beautiful day down there so we soaked up some time playing on the beach and followed that by some lunch at Pelican Brewery (just opened!). The Oregon coast on a sunny day is really just the best.

Cannon Beach, Oregon is by far one of my favorite spots. It isn’t too far from Portland and has such a great charm to it. Especially if you have kids, I highly recommend a visit.

My top recommendations:
-Hike through Ecola State Park
-If sunny, catch some rays at Indian Beach
-Grab lunch at Pelican Brewery (they just opened a new one in CB)
-Shop
-Have a drink on the patio at Wayfarer
-Grab coffee and gluten-free treats at Sea Level

Hope you all had a wonderful weekend!

Meditation: A Simple Way I’ve Learned to Be More Present

Although it’s been around for thousands of years, meditation is definitely more embraced and understood now than ever. Which is pretty exciting.

I was first introduced to meditation back when I was studying at IIN. I remember learning about it and thinking what a great addition it would be into my daily routine. For me however, it was just an appreciation, never something I actually found time to practice. Then, it was last year that I was watching a television program where Dan Harris from ABC news was talking about his new book, “10% Happier” which was inspired by his journey into meditating. You can learn more about his story here.
After listening to his experience I was quickly motivated to read Eckhart Tolle’s, “Power of Now,” which I had surprisingly never read. As I began the book, I started to pay attention to two things: living in the moment (in the now) and understanding that little voice in my head. And this is where my exploration really started.
As a mother, a wife and a business woman, my life is a bit hectic. I barely remember what I did two hours ago, I juggle way too many things at once and I pride myself on being a remarkable multi-tasker. I’d come home from work, cook dinner, and respond to work emails all while I have a face mask on, the laundry going and my son on my hip. (“I kick serious A%$” -says the voice in my head).
What didn’t occur to me at that time was that I really didn’t have all that going on. Instead, I was stretched so thin that anything pertaining to “living in the now” was actually non-existent. Even when I’d be giving my son a bath I’d still be planning the next day in my head or thinking about how badly I need to clean the bath tub. Bringing myself back to the present felt weird (and still does), but the stranger it felt, the more determinded I was to help myself learn how to get there.
Welcome, meditation.
Meditation is obviously a bit different for each person. To me, meditation is being mindful. It is being aware of how I’m doing, the thoughts in my head and learning how to just be. I personally needed someone to hold my hand when I first started, so I liked listening to podcasts or using apps on my phone. However, even a 5 minute break each day works wonders.
Here is the simplest way I’ve enjoyed meditating:
Set your timer for 5 minutes.

Sit down in a quiet area.

I like having water sounds or something simple in the background.

Close your eyes.

Start breathing in through your nose and out through your mouth slowly and evenly.

Let your mind wader for just a second, and bring your thought to either not thinking about anything except your breath, repeating your own mantra, or a happy picture in your head.

If you start thinking about groceries, what that tingle in your foot is, or where to eat dinner later, don’t worry – this is totally normally. The trick is to notice those thoughts, but come back to your meditation.
Voila! Simple and effective.
Another suggestion is a 21-Day Meditation Guide by Deepak Chopra and Oprah OR a meditation app; whatever you decide works best for you!
I’m still not great at this. I’ve gotten better, but I am still terrible at 1) sitting still and 2) getting OUT of my head. One thing I will say though is that I’m much better at being present. I’m constantly having to “turn my brain off” and allow myself to just be.

We live in a society today that requires us to be “on” 24/7. We are overstimulated on a daily basis by work, emails, the news, social media and the terrible idea that we have to “do it all.” Not all of us are taking care of our minds and bodies like we should. But… there is good news. It all comes down to a choice. We can decide to stay off of our phones while we are eating dinner. We can decide that we are going to be completely present with our family and friends. We can decide to take 5 minutes out of the day to meditate. It is the practice of even trying that our mind and body loves us for.
So here’s to at least doing our best!

Until next time,
Linds xx

Skinny White Basil Sangria

This past week I had to whip up one of my favorite drinks to enjoy when it’s warm out. There is something so satisfying about a good sangria.

While I don’t count my calories by any means, I always try and be mindful of my intake. That is especially true when it comes to alcohol. I love food. A lot. And I’d rather not skimp out on a meal so I can have a calorie packed cocktail. I’d rather have a lighter beverage and a good meal. So, meet my go-to sangria style drink I like to make at home:

Skinny White Basil Sangria
yields about 5 glasses

1 bottle of organic pinot grigio (A cheaper one is great -I use Green Fin from Trader Joes)
2 cups sparkling water (lime flavored)
2 tablespoons agave
2 small green apples chopped (skin on)
1 orange chopped (skin on)
2 tablespoons chopped fresh basil

optional: diced strawberries or raspberries

Directions:

In a medium size pitcher, add chopped fruit and basil.

Pour in wine and sparkling water.

Add in agave and stir well.

Let it sit in the fridge for at least an hour.

Enjoy!
